Lenny Kravitz let the music speak for itself as he was presented with the Music Icon Award at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards. He also recounted some of the significant steps he took in his music career during an emotional speech.
Although Taylor Swift was unable to attend due to her touring commitments, Kravitz stole the show with a mini-set of his classic hits and a heartfelt speech.
Kravitz and his band performed “Fly Away” and a medley of his other hits, including “TK421,” It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over,” “Let Love Rule,” and Are You Gonna Go My Way.”
Following the electric performance, Victoria Monét presented Kravitz with the Music Icon Award.
Discussing the meaning of the word “icon,” Kravitz stated, “It means a lot of things to a lot of people, to me it means you’ve made an indelible mark by being who God created you to be. And, daring to be different.”
Kravitz reflected on the guidance officers who once wanted to change him and his refusal to compromise his authenticity for fame and success.
He believes that an icon is someone who inspires and teaches others to believe in themselves and their unique path.
Kravitz emphasized that his musical journey has never been about commercial success, but about enjoying the journey, using his gifts, and staying true to himself.
During her opening statement, Monét described Kravitz as an “undefinable, undeniable, once in a lifetime genius” and a force to be reckoned with.
She also praised Kravitz for defying any singular description and being a multifaceted talent in music, fashion, and philanthropy.
