Lucy Letby: killer nurse jailed for rest of her life by UK court

Nurse Lucy Letby has been found guilty of killing seven babies and sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of release. The judge described Letby’s crimes as bordering on sadism and stated that she showed no remorse. She injected the infants with insulin or air, or force fed them milk. Some of the babies she targeted were twins, and she successfully murdered both siblings in one case and two out of three triplets in another. Letby failed in her attempts to kill one twin in two instances. The judge emphasized the cruelty, calculation, and cynicism of her actions towards the most vulnerable children. The parents of the victims sobbed in the courtroom as the sentence was delivered. This is only the fourth time a whole-life order has been given in the UK, with Myra Hindley and Rosemary West being two other recipients. The police have not been able to determine a motive for Letby’s crimes. The families of the victims expressed their devastation and called Letby’s refusal to attend her sentencing a final act of wickedness. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak criticized her for not hearing the impact of her actions firsthand, calling it cowardly. The government is considering making attendance at sentencing compulsory. An inquiry has been ordered to address the concerns raised by senior doctors on the neonatal unit and to provide the families with the answers they need. Police are also investigating other admissions to neonatal units where Letby worked to look for any additional victims.
