A South Australian dad charged with drug possession in Bali was allegedly sent a parcel of methamphetamine, leading to a raid of his hotel.
Troy Smith and his wife, from Port Lincoln, were arrested by Bali police on April 30 after 0.04g of meth and a bong were allegedly found in their room.
His lawyer, Ida Bagus Gumilang Galih Sakti, said the raid was triggered after Smith was allegedly sent a parcel from Australia with about 3g of meth that was intercepted by Balinese authorities.
He alleged the drug was disguised in a toothpaste container, but said Smith did not order the drugs, it was given to him as a “present”.
He alleged the drugs found in the hotel room, Smith purchased while in Kuta, Bali’s party district.
Drug possession carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in imprisonment in Indonesia.
Smith has formerly worked as a fisherman and at the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula.
His wife has been released without charge but remains in Bali.
Sakti said his client had “admitted” he had been struggling with a drug addiction since 2020.
“He’s trying to stop, but his body couldn’t, his mind couldn’t do it,” Sakti said.
“As a lawyer, we are trying to do as much as we do (to) get him rehabilitation, but let me see how it will be in the courtroom,“ he said.
Smith remains in custody.
He posted to social media that he’d turned his life around after battling an alcohol addiction with the help of his wife.
“Absolutely hit rock bottom, you couldn’t have drunk anymore than me,” he said in the video
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is offering Smith consular assistance.
