Man, 70, dies after ‘medical episode’ led to 4-car pile-up on A66 slip lane with 5 injured

A MAN has died after a “medical episode” which led to a four-car pile-up and left five people injured.

The A66 Hartington slip lane in Middlesbrough was closed for several hours following the collision at 8.40am on Wednesday while medical teams worked to try to save the 70-year-old’s life.

The 44-year-old man travelling with the 70-year-old man in the white Mercedes Sprinter van, suffered a sprained ankle.  Both men were from outside of the Teesside area. 

The driver of a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, a 22-year-old man, and his passenger, a 55-year-old woman, both sustained minor injuries. 

The driver of a white Peugeot 208, an 18-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman driving a black Audi A1 also suffered minor injuries.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 8.38am this morning (Wednesday 6 December) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A66 in Middlesbrough.

“We dispatched three ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical leader, and requested the support of our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended via air.

“Three patients were transported by road to The James Cook University Hospital for further treatment.”
