Man Utd fall even further down football rich list despite club-record income… and Old Trafford is to blame

MANCHESTER UNITED would top the money-making league if they had a decent stadium.

Following the publication of the latest Deloitte Football Money League, a lead partner at the accountants suggested Sir Jim Ratcliffe should copy Tottenham’s success and rebuild Old Trafford.

The Red Devils’ income was up £65m to £648m for the 2022-23 season — a club-record figure.

But they fell to fifth in the table, well behind Manchester City’s £718.2m.

Spurs rake in £6m from every game at their glitzy 62,000-capacity home and have moved up to eighth in the money table.

The Londoners bagged more than half a billion pounds for the first time, up by £106m to £549.2m.

Deloitte’s Tim Bridge said: “United retain an ability to generate significant commercial returns.

“They still generate £100m-plus from Old Trafford.

“I believe if they had a genuine matchday offering that kept the fans in and around the stadium in the way you have at Tottenham, the results from a revenue perspective could be revolutionary and really outplay the rest of the competition.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool dropped from third to seventh after seeing their revenue fall by just £500,000.

Chelsea dropped a place into ninth despite theirs rising by over £30m.

And Arsenal remain tenth after a healthy boost of nearly £100m.

The table was topped by Real Madrid, with PSG and Barcelona also making the top five.
