ALEJANDRO GARNACHO proved to be the difference maker as Manchester United laboured past Everton to a 2-0 victory.
Coming off the back of a 3-1 defeat in the Manchester derby and a 2-1 loss to Fulham in their last Premier League game at Old Trafford, the Red Devils knew a win was vital today.
But ravaged by injuries, Erik ten Hag’s side produced a disjointed performance, exemplified by Casemiro’s often wayward passing.
However, Garnacho proved to be a bright spark in the first half with his direct running winning two penalties in front of the Stretford End.
The first was dispatched by captain Bruno Fernandes while the second was converted by Marcus Rashford.
Here’s how Neil Custis rated the Red Devils played against the Toffees.
ANDRE ONANA – 7
Gave a very honest interview last week about how he struggled in his early months at United. He is back to his best now.
DIOGO DALOT – 7
Covered acres going up and down that right flank. Aaron Wan-Bissaka could have a job getting his place back.
JONNY EVANS – 7
Rio Ferdinand said it was a big error United ever letting him go and you can’t dispute that with his displays since returning.
RAPHAEL VARANE – 7
Refused to be bullied out a game he read from the start alongside Evans.

VICTOR LINDELOF – 7
He was clearly targeted as not being a recognised left-back but handled it well and could grow into his new role.
CASEMIRO – 6
Had a torrid opening few minutes as Everton pushed high up the pitch but quickly calmed the situation down in front of the back four.
KOBBIE MAINOO – 6
Struggling to replicate his away form here at Old Trafford but still doesn’t look out of place.
SCOTT MCTOMINAY – 7
His match changing performances from the bench were in danger of making him only a super sub. He deserves starts.
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 9
What a player, what a star. Won both first half penalties with his speed and skill. Constantly peeling away form his right flank across the pitch and Everton could not track him.
BRUNO FERNANDES – 8
This was more like it from the club captain. Spraying balls around the park and scoring a cool penalty.
MARCUS RASHFORD – 6
Took his penalty well to put United 2-0 up but still seems to be playing within himself. Barely had a chance in open play.
SOFYAN AMRABAT (For Mainoo 79) – 6
Didn’t have time to do too much damage, to either side.
ANTONY (Garnacho 83) – 6
Proving to be a very expensive mistake.

WILY KAMBWALA (For Evans 89) – 6
Came on at right back with Lindelof moved into middle to see out final minutes.
