Mandurah’s estuary Kwillena Gabi Pool honoured at Australian Institute of Architects WA awards

Mandurah has cleaned up with a slew of awards at the Australian Institute of Architects WA awards, including top recognition for the estuary pool.

The City of Mandurah’s eastern foreshore, Kwillena Gabi Pool, took home the Award of Excellence in the tourism category at Friday’s awards held at Perth Zoo.

The estuary swimming pool features a curved floating walkway, with the design led by the city’s landscape architects.

The judging jury said the pool was a “nuanced and inclusive” project that attracted both tourists and locals.

“The design response to the tidal environment and minimal below-water infrastructure is coupled with the incorporation of Indigenous culture, attention to safety and accessibility, and preservation of the site’s public use through creative, inclusive and thoughtful planning,” the jury said.

“Local government leadership shines in this complex coastal project, creating a beautifully simple, inclusive space that is understated and dramatic all at once.”

The western foreshore redevelopment and its playground also received recognition at the Landscape Architecture Awards, with Mandurah’s overall foreshore redevelopment projects awarded the WA Medal.

The night’s top award of excellence in the play spaces category went to the new Perth Zoo playground, while OneOneFive housing development in Hamilton Hill secured an award of excellence in landscape planning.

All winners at the State awards level proceed to the National Landscape Architecture Awards later this year.
