Mazda recalls BT-50 (TF) models over engine defect that could cause car fire

Mazda has recalled almost 9,000 utes over an engine defect that “could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants”.

Mazda’s BT-50 (TF) 3.0 Iitre utes made between 2021 and 2023 are part of the recall, issued by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

As a result of a manufacturing issue, the department said a faulty engine part may cause a vehicle fire.

“The fuel hose may chafe against the engine oil level bracket and become damaged. If this occurs, fuel may leak in the presence of an external ignition source resulting in a vehicle fire,” the recall notice said.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders and/or damage to property.”

Mazda will contact affected customers to have the vehicle’s fuel hose replaced free of charge when the part becomes available.

Owners can check their vehicle identification number (VIN) to see if it’s on a list of cars that need to be repaired.
