A worker broke a foot when it was run over by a gun carriage.

Others suffered a perforated ear drum from a jet display, dog bites and sports-related injuries.

The MoD last year paid £83.6million compensation for incidents affecting personnel and £23.6million to civilian staff.

It did not say if the payouts were linked to the mishaps reported to the Health and Safety Executive.

Gordon Dalyell, of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, said: “Like any employer, the MoD has a duty of care to its employees.

“If people are injured through no fault of their own while simply doing their jobs, then the MOD should be held to account for its failings.

“This way, lessons can be learned so similar needless injuries can be avoided in the future.

“This will, in turn, reduce the cost of compensation.”

The MoD said: “We have robust policies and processes in place to address the health, safety and wellbeing of our people.

“When accidents happen, we work to find out how to prevent future occurrences.

“When compensation claims are received, they are considered on the basis of whether or not we have a legal liability to pay compensation.

“Where there is a proven legal liability, compensation is paid.”
