Naomi Campbell Rewears a Couture Dress She Debuted on the Runway in 1996

Rewearing an old dress is part of life—and, hello, sustainable!—but not many of us can say that we recycled a dress we debuted on the runway. For Chanel. Couture. Naomi Campbell may, in fact, be the only person who can say that (and if anyone else can, they’re in great company).

Today, for the Cannes premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the supermodel broke out a piece that she originally wore for the Chanel fall 1996 couture show. The sultry floor-length dress features a black sequined bodice held up by straps made of strings of pearls that draped over her shoulders. The dress’s mermaid skirt is striped with the same black paillettes, alternating with rows of sheer black tulle. While Campbell wore the dress over a black slip on the ‘90s runway, she decided to forgo it in 2024, just wearing black underwear underneath.

Styled by Law Roach, who also wore Chanel—the brand’s hallmark tweed jacket—Campbell offered a glam take on the look she sauntered down the runway in 27 years ago. She wore a pair of matte black pointy-toe pumps (as opposed to the round patent leather ones from the Chanel show), and added a pair of dramatic dangly earrings. And, while she wore her hair in a sleek crop back in 1996, today she let her voluminous curls flow down her back.

Naomi Campbell has already proven herself one of the most enduring models of all time. Now, she’s proving the value—and flex—of an enduring wardrobe, too.
