Netflix is making a Minecraft show

Mojang Studios and Netflix announced on Thursday that they will be teaming up for a Minecraft animated series. The Minecraft series is being developed by WildBrain, which previously made Sonic Prime and Ninjago: Dragons Rising for Netflix.

Honestly, I’m surprised there hasn’t already been a Minecraft series. We’ve seen Minecraft Lego sets, tabletop games, books, and a whole host of spinoff video games. But there hasn’t yet been an official Minecraft TV show, an oversight Netflix is finally amending.

We have no idea what the TV show will be about, as all the announcement trailer shows us is a creeper blowing up and an area that looks suspiciously like the Nether. For anyone who doesn’t know, the Nether is a biome in Minecraft that is separate from the Overworld. Players can only access it by building a Nether Portal out of Obsidian.

While Netflix’s originals are always hit or miss, its batting average on animated series is higher than on live-action fare, in my opinion. BoJack Horseman, Blue Eye Samurai, Big Mouth, Castlevania, Arcane — many of my favorite animated shows of the past decade have been Netflix Originals. That alone has me excited for the Minecraft show.

Personally, I am most interested to see if this series has any connection to the Minecraft movie. The star-studded cast of the Minecraft movie includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement. The movie is slated to release on April 4, 2025, which will presumably be before the show premieres.

While it has a release date, we don’t know much about the plot other than this synopsis:

The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.

It’s going to be a busy few years for fans of Minecraft, which is just about due for its next major update. The Tricky Trials update introduces new trial chambers for players to conquer, new mob types called the bogged and the breeze, and a mace for bashing baddies.
