SUBSCRIBERS to Netflix’s cheapest ad-supported package have received a major free upgrade.
It’s a sneaky way to get around watching the ads – while still paying less than ad-free viewers.
It follows a recent price hike for Netflix’s ad-free plans – making the ad-supported version all the more tempting to cash-strapped viewers.
The Standard with ads package still costs £4.99 / $6.99 per month.
In an announcement last night, Netflix said ad-supported subscribers will be shown fewer ads while they’re knee-deep in a TV or movie binge.
That’s right – Netflix will actually reward you for your binge watches.
It forms part of a ‘watch three get one free’ initiative that means subscribers won’t be shown ads during any fourth episode of a TV marathon.
“Starting in Q1 2024, our advertisers globally will be able to utilise our new binge ad format that taps into the viewing behaviour of watching multiple episodes in a row,” the company said in a blog post.
“After watching three consecutive episodes, members will be presented with a fourth episode ad-free.”
More to come
The upgrade for the ad-supported tier doesn’t stop there.
Netflix is also enabling ad-watching subscribers to download content for on-the-go viewing.
Every other Netflix subscription had this perk except for folks on the ad-supported tier.
But that’s now, fortunately, changed.
The ad-supported package also lets viewers watch 1080p quality shows on two devices simultaneously – the same as the standard tier which costs £10.99 / $15.49 per month.
