New art installation at Lewis and Clark Library

HELENA — Lewis and Clark Library is showcasing a new art installation that is sure to catch your eye. According to Director John Finn, the installation is both beautiful and a great conversation starter.

John Waltner, the artist behind the installation, was inspired to create the piece after visiting the library with his family. He wanted to fill the empty space above the books with his colorful mobile art.

Titled “‘Oro y Plata’ — Colors of Montana”, the installation was finally completed and installed in October. Waltner drew inspiration from Montana’s State Seal, featuring the phrase “Oro y Plata” which means “Gold and Silver” in Spanish, but his main goal was to create a visually appealing piece for library visitors.

Waltner emphasized that his art is meant to bring color and abstract shapes into the air, without necessarily representing anything specific. He chose the library as the setting for his installation to support public art and its impact on the community.

He believes that exposure to public art is beneficial for everyone, even if people don’t always stop to notice it. The installation joins another large hanging art piece at the library by local artist, Richard Swanson.
