New ‘Fear Street’ Movie in the Works at Netflix, R.L. Stine Says

A film adaptation of R.L. Stine’s 1992 “Fear Street” novel “The Prom Queen” is in development at Netflix, the author himself reports.

Stine took to X/Twitter on Saturday to share the news, writing, “Movie News: I can finally announce that a new ‘Fear Street’ movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It’s based on my ‘Fear Street’ book, ‘The Prom Queen.’ Good news!”

This will be the fourth “Fear Street” film adapted from the book series after “Fear Street Part One: 1994,” “Fear Street Part Two: 1978” and “Fear Street Part Three: 1666.” Directed by Leigh Janiak, the trilogy was released on Netflix over three back-to-back weeks in July 2021 and followed a group of teenagers living in Shadyside, Ohio, who discover the haunting events that plague their town. “The Prom Queen” will feature a new cast of characters.

“A spring night…soft moonlight…five beautiful Prom Queen candidates…dancing couples at the Shadyside High prom — these should be the ingredients for romance. But stir in one brutal murder — then another, and another — and the recipe quickly turns to horror,” reads the book description as per Stine’s official website. “Lizzie McVay realizes that someone is murdering the five Prom Queen candidates one by one — and that she may be next on the list! Can she stop the murderer before the dance is over — for good?”

The first three “Fear Street” films from Netflix received positive reviews, making it onto Variety’s “Best Horror Movies of 2021” list and receiving 84%, 87% and 88% critics’ scores on Rotten Tomatoes (for Parts 1, 2 and 3, respectively).

“Taken on their own, any one of these films loosely based on R.L. Stine’s novels would be an above-average genre throwback,” wrote Michael Nordine in his review of “Fear Street Part Three: 1666” and the “Fear Street” trilogy for Variety. “Together, they amount to one of the more involving horror series in recent memory.”
