Move over, Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman is the latest Hollywood star to have a rom-com featuring an older woman and younger man.
Kidman, 56, is starring in the Netflix comedy “A Family Affair” opposite Zac Efron, 36.
The first trailer premiered on Wednesday, showcasing steamy moments between the stars.
The story follows Zara (Joey King, 24), who works as an assistant to movie star Chris Cole (Efron). Zara quits her job because he’s a self-absorbed and difficult boss whom she “hates,” as she notes in the trailer.
But, matters become awkward when Chris and Zara’s mom, Brooke (Kidman), have an affair.
In the trailer, Zara walks in to find Chris and her mom in bed together. Screaming, Zara tries to cover her eyes and leave, only to walk into the doorframe.
Chris is shown sharing several other PDA scenes with Brooke, and telling her, “I’ve been waiting for you forever.”
“A Family Affair” marks a recent trend for May-December relationships featuring older women and younger men, as “May December” starred Julianne Moore, 63, and Charles Melton, 33, and Prime Video’s “The Idea of You” featured Anne Hathaway, 41, playing a divorced woman falling for a 24-year-old boy band star (played by Nicholas Galitzine, 29).
It also marks a reunion for Kidman and Efron, since they also co-starred in 2012’s “The Paperboy.”
“I was still a bit apprehensive, but reuniting with Nicole is always so great, and as talented as she [is] as an actress, she is equally kind, caring and wonderful to spend time with,” Efron told People.
Director Richard LaGravenese (“P.S. I Love You”) told the outlet that the actors’ spark was “an answered prayer — something you hope for but can’t plan.”
“The interplay between Joey and Zac’s characters as an assistant and star is so much fun,” the Brooklyn native added.
“I also love the mother-daughter reversal where the daughter becomes the disapproving, judgmental, suspicious parent, and the mother is sneaking around her back having a love affair that makes her feel like she’s come back to life.”
“A Family Affair” premieres on Netflix June 28.
