Nipah Virus: All educational institutes to remain shut in Kozhikode till Sept 24

NEW DELHI: In light of the Nipah virus, the Kerala government has decided to shut all educational institutions including schools, colleges, and tuition centres for a week until September 24 in Kozhikode district. However, online classes will be conducted for students throughout the week, the district administration said on Friday.
Health minister Veena George has said currently the contact list for infected individuals comprises 1,080 people, with an additional 130 individuals newly added on Friday. Among those listed, 327 are healthcare workers.
A total of 29 people in other districts are in the contact list of Nipah-infected people. Of these, 22 persons are from Malappuram, one from Wayanad, and three each from Kannur and Thrissur, George added.
In the high-risk category, 175 of them are common people and 122 are healthcare workers.
The health minister also conveyed that the number of individuals on the contact list is expected to increase, following the positive test result of the person who passed away on August 30, making it the first identified case of Nipha in the district.
Currently, the state has recorded a total of six confirmed cases of Nipah virus.
Additionally, 17 persons who had attended the funeral of the person who died on August 30 have been placed in isolation. Among them, four of the active cases are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
