WESTLAKE – Oaks Christian football beat Chaparral 41-7 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs on Friday night in a complete four quarters of effort.
Nate Bennett completed 15 of 19 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns and Chase Farrell caught 10 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns.
“The guys played connected, they played together and it’s just kind of an idea of who we are when we’re playing good football,” coach Charlie Collins said.
Oaks Christian (9-2) scored on its second drive of the game. A short Chaparral punt set the Lions up on the 39-line and Nate Bennett started off the series with a 17-yard pass to Chase Farrell. Three plays later, Bennett and Farrell connected again, this time for a 17-yard touchdown.
Linebacker Christian Knoos recovered a fumble when Chaparral (7-4) got the ball and McKenzie Parks (eight carries, 63 yards) punched it in from 3 yards out shortly after to give Oaks Christian a 14-0 advantage with 4:57 remaining in the first quarter.
Chaparral recovered a fumble on its own punt late in the opening frame and Dash Beierly completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Alvarez to start the second quarter.
The Lions scored just before halftime for a 21-7 lead before the break. Bennett hit Stevie Amar with a 17-yard pass with 1:55 to go, giving Oaks Christian’s depleted offense a much-needed lead.
Justice Williams, a Washington commit, did not dress for the game due to injury, leaving the Lions without a valuable receiver. Running back Deshonne Redeaux also was out due to injury.
Oaks Christian started the third quarter in a big way when Bennett connected with Farrell for a 43-yard touchdown. Farrell’s third touchdown reception came six seconds into the final quarter when he snatched a 12-yard pass from Devin Tate, who came into the game at quarterback late in the third quarter.
Tate (5-for-6, 73 yards) scored on a 1-yard keeper with 7:46 remaining in the game.
Oaks Christian heads to Mission Viejo (8-3), which beat Palos Verdes 59-35, for a second- round matchup on Friday, Nov. 10.
