Odisha govt begins process for installation of Wi-Fi facilities in state public university campuses

BHUBANESWAR: The state government has started the process for installation of Wi-Fi services at the state public university campuses across the state. The higher education department on Wednesday asked the authorities of the universities to submit detailed estimation for approval regarding installation of free wi-fi services in the campuses.
“The government of Odisha intends to provide free Wi-Fi facilities for the students in the campus of the universities for improvement in the academic environment, as most of the study resources/books are now-a-days available online,” said higher education department special secretary Ramakanta Nayak.
Some state public universities including Utkal University and Rama Devi Women’s University have already installed this service by using funds from the university and other projects.
“We have made our university campus Wi-Fi enabled. As we always depend on the internet for accessing e-resources and online materials, we have installed the service from a World Bank project. If the government gives us funds for this purpose, we will make it more vibrant for students,” said Aparajita Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar.
Utkal University here has been providing the Wi-Fi facilities in the campus for several years. Some other higher education institutions have also taken steps to start installation of the Wi-Fi services.
On September 13, higher education minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak while addressing the principals of degree colleges said the department has taken necessary steps for using technology for teaching and learning processes. He had told them about the rollout of Wi-Fi facilities in the higher education institutions across the state in a phased manner.
Providing free Wi-Fi and 1 GB data for students was a promise in the ruling party’s election manifesto released before the 2019 general election. On May 25, after annual review of performance of the higher education department, former higher education minister Rohit Pujari had told the media about providing Wi-Fi facilities in the campuses from the academic session 2023-24.
