Odisha Research Center launched for multidisciplinary research

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Research Center (ORC)- a one of its kind and unique research institute to delve deep into the rich cultural and historical heritage of Odisha and to promote multidisciplinary research, launched here on Sunday. The institute has been set up as an collaboration between premier institutes like the Indian Council of Social Science and Research (ICSSR), Indian Knowledge Systems division of the ministry of education, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bhubaneswar and Indian Institute of Management-Sambalpur.
Speaking on the occasion union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “History works as a mirror to the future. Due to proper research and lack of factual evidence, the prosperous and glorious past of Odisha restricted to folklores. ORC will conduct a study on the past, present and future of Odisha based on fact-based evidence. The institute will chalk out a road map for growth and development of the state and its people keeping an eye on 2036 and 2047, when Odisha will turn 100 and India will complete 100 years of independence.”
The ORC will function from the IIT-Karagpur’s extension campus in the city. For the centre Indian Council of Social Science and Research has sanctioned a fund of Rs 15.75 crore.
“Odisha was prosperous before the Kalinga War and was a port-based economy. There are many evidence of Odisha’s strong trade links with South East Asia and Africa in the wall carvings of Konark Sun Temple. The rich and prosperous history of the state will be studied through a multidisciplinary approach using the expertise of IITs and IIMs,” Pradhan added.
ORC will be a one stop shop for any researcher on Odisha, the region, its culture, engineering, management across the field to see how over the three millennia this society has developed, what are its contributions and what is the way forward. “This is a unique experiment we are trying to do and a first of its kind institute. Based on the success that we will derive at ORC, we will see if that can be replicated in other regions to capture the rich history and culture of the country. This will be in line with the national education policy 2020 of carrying the Indian knowledge system forward,” said K Sanjay Murthy, union education secretary.
Currently as part of multidisciplinary approach many interesting researches are anchored by institutes like IITs and IIMs. All such research will be brought under one umbrella in ORC.
“How do we connect the past to the present and the future through research will be done here. The researchers are going to work on how Odisha served as the bridge between the north and south, on intermixing of the old tribal and Jagannath culture. They will work on people, on technology, on Sastras, on tribal cultures and how we can learn from it. It will be a youth focused center where the primary thrust is to make sure that the parampara and knowledge tradition remain alive by passing it to the new generation. A hub for anything related to Odisha and any scholar can come and do research on Odisha,” said Prof Ganti Suryanarayana Murthy, national coordinator of Indian Knowledge System.
