Pirates are thought to be close to renewing the contract of goalkeeper Richard Ofori ahead of the next season.

It was thought Pirates were hoping Ofori would have a solid Afcon with Ghana, so they can sell him. The idea was to sell him to Europe, so they can cash in big on the player. But, the player’s tournament ended up being a disaster. The player is yet to feature in league football but according to Soccer-Laduma the Buccaneers are still looking to extend the former Maritzburg United star’s contract.

“It’s as good as done. It’s the club (Pirates) that makes the decision on exercising the option and they have agreed that for all departments from the technical team to management. They have reached an agreement that he needs to stay on for yet another year which was added to his (Ofori) contract when he extended last season for one year and another one-year option. As it stands now it’s as good as done,” said one source.

A second source claims that Pirates still value the experience Ofori has on the continent.

Pirates to extend Ofori deal

“The team needs three or four experienced goalkeepers and he is one of them. He may not be playing locally but when the team goes to Africa they will need him. They are fighting to go back to play in the Champions League and they will need all the experienced players and he is one of them. So, the contract extension is to keep him for those reasons,” said the second source.

It then makes sense that the only appearance Ofori has made for Pirates this season was in CAF Champions League. He currently finds himself as third choice keeper behind Sipho Chaine and Melusi Buthelezi.
