Orlando Pirates starlet set to leave and return to old PSL club

Orlando Pirates starlet set to leave and return to old PSL club after two years, as first reported by SABC Sport.

Winger Azola Matrose is on the brink of rejoining Chippa United after spending two seasons with Pirates. The 21-year-old, who initially made waves with Chippa United before his move to Orlando Pirates, is poised for a return to his former club.

Pirates signed Matrose with high expectations, given his impressive performances during his first top-flight stint with Chippa. Despite the excitement surrounding his acquisition, Matrose spent the bulk of his time on loan at the Chilli Boys to maintain regular game time and continue his development.

Orlando Pirates officially welcomed Matrose in July last year, but he arrived with an injury that sidelined him for a considerable period. His return saw him primarily feature in the DStv Diski Challenge, where he played almost every game in the second round. However, Matrose never made his first-team debut for The Buccaneers, sparking speculation about his future.

Chippa United secures Matrose with a new contract

Recent reports confirm that Orlando Pirates and Chippa United have agreed on a deal to bring Matrose back to his hometown. Chippa United has offered Matrose a three-year contract with an additional two-year option, signalling their commitment to reviving his career under the guidance of coach Kwanele Kopo, assisted by Thabo September.

Matrose, still a junior international, has the potential to rediscover the form that made him a standout performer at Chippa. The club, which narrowly avoided relegation last season, has set ambitious goals for the upcoming campaign, including a Top 8 finish.

Pre-season preparation and new signings

Chippa United will integrate Matrose into their 10-day pre-season camp in Johannesburg next week. The club has also unveiled other new signings, including veteran midfielder Andile Jali and former TS Galaxy winger Aphelele Teto. Matrose’s return aims to bolster Chippa’s squad as they prepare for the new season and seek to make a significant impact.

An official announcement regarding Matrose’s move back to Chippa United is expected in the coming days, marking a new chapter in his career and a fresh start with the club
