CNN – Phil Mickelson was reportedly considering a $400,000 bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup, in which he was participating, according to a forthcoming book by professional gambler Billy Walters. The book, excerpted by Fire Pit Collective and Golf Digest, alleges that Walters was in a gambling partnership with Mickelson for five years and claims that Mickelson made thousands of wagers on various sports between 2010 and 2014. Walters also alleges that Mickelson’s gambling losses were much higher than previously reported, reaching close to $100 million. CNN has not been able to independently verify these claims. Mickelson denied betting on the 2012 Ryder Cup and stated that he would never undermine the integrity of the game. The PGA Tour has declined to comment, and CNN has reached out to Mickelson’s representation for further comment. Mickelson has previously acknowledged his struggles with gambling addiction. Walters, who is known as the “most dangerous sports bettor in Nevada,” was convicted of insider trading charges and sentenced to five years in prison, although his sentence was commuted by former President Donald Trump in 2021. Walters suggests in the book that Mickelson’s refusal to publicly acknowledge that Walters had shared inside information with him contributed to his prison sentence. Mickelson was ordered to pay fines to the Securities and Exchange Commission for profiting off a tip from Walters. Mickelson’s involvement in the controversial LIV Golf tour, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has also attracted criticism. The PGA Tour recently announced a partnership with LIV Golf, sparking outrage from groups representing families and survivors of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks due to allegations of Saudi government involvement. The Saudi government has denied any involvement in the attacks.
