Pirates put ‘six of the best’ past Crystal Lake

Orlando Pirates started their Nedbank Cup title defence with an emphatic 6-0 win over Crystal Lake on Saturday afternoon at the Mbombela Stadium.

The Buccaneers took control of the game from the first whistle and rewarded in the four minutes when they forced an own goal.

Four minutes later, Tapelo Xoki made it 2-0 from the spot after Evidence Makgopa was brought down in the box.

Relebohile Mofokeng added a third in the 11th minute with a long range.

Crystal Lake had their keeper Excellent Mkhonto to thank for keeping Pirates at bay for another 20 minutes before Patrick Maswanganyi made it 4-0.

The keeper was eventually subbed off due to injury and was replaced with Busani Mabunda.

Orlando Pirates should be wary of Crystal Lake

The Mpumalanga side were nearly five down but the linesman raised his flag for offside.

Xoki scored a brace shortly after half-time to extend Pirates’ lead.

The home team got into the game in the second half and even created a few opportunities of their own but failed to beat Bucs keeper Sipho Chaile.

A late goal by Tshegofatso Mabasa made it six in the final 10 minutes.

Pirates next play Polokwane City in their next fixture.
