Police find explosive railway device after it went missing in Tenterden, north of Albany

An explosive railway detonator that vanished from a railway north of Albany has been found meters from where it was reported missing after it was “misplaced” by workers.

The public was urged to remain vigilant after police were tasked to investigate a missing railway detonator in Tenterden — similar to the device pictured below.

Cranbrook Police Officer in Charge Sgt. Nat Wynen confirmed the small explosive was found in the hours after it was reported missing on Thursday afternoon.

Sgt Wynen said the device was located about five metres from where it was reported missing during a foot search by police.

She said it is believed the device was misplaced by workers on the railway line.

The detonator is being conveyed back to the owners of the detonator, Arc Infrastructure, who had initially reported the detonator missing.

The company website states its workers operate and manage 5,500km of freight rail network across the WA’s South West region.

Local police said the device — which is believed to be about 45mm wide — can cause harm if handled incorrectly.

“If located, do not handle! This item can cause harm,” police said via social media.

The devices are usually attached to railways to emit loud warning sounds to train drivers in various scenarios. They explode under pressure.

The explosive and dangerous goods section of WorkSafe has been contacted for comment.
