Popular Mullaloo Beach closed for two days due to algae bloom

Mullaloo Beach was closed on Wednesday but not due to a shark sighting — rather an algae bloom.

Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club posted on its Facebook page informing the public the beach’s closure for at least two days due to an algae bloom called trichodesmium.

According to the City of Rockingham website, trichodesmium is also known as red tide or sea sawdust due to its resemblance and can be seen floating on the water’s surface in affected areas.

It is identified by a yellow-brown surface scum with the appearance of an oil slick.

The Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions spokesperson said they do not manage the beach but confirmed the existence of the algae.

“DBCA can confirm there is Trichodesmium bloom sighted in the water at Mullaloo beach on 17 January 2024,” the spokesperson said.

“This bloom has most likely formed due to the hot and calm conditions we have experienced over the recent days.

“It is not known to be harmful to humans however it can cause minor skin irritations. It is recommended to not swim/walk through the bloom and keep pets away. If you do come in to contact, rinse with freshwater immediately.”

The surf life saving club told PerthNow the beach’s closure was out of their control and in the hands of other authorities.

The closure involves all water and beach training for the surf life saving club.
