Princess Charlotte and Prince George at Wimbledon 2023

The British royal family’s love of tennis is being successfully passed down to the next generation. On July 16, 8-year-old Princess Charlotte attended Wimbledon for the first time, alongside her big brother, Prince George (who made his debut in 2022), and her parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William. The Cambridges’ youngest child, 5-year-old Louis, isn’t quite old enough to attend Wimbledon just yet (although he is beginning to step out at royal engagements), but he’ll no doubt be joining the rest of his family in a few years.

As for Charlotte, the young royal appeared to have a blast at the men’s single final as she watched Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic battle it out for the Wimbledon Trophy. At one point, the little princess crossed her fingers as she looked on nervously, and at another, she seemed to be concentrating as she chewed on her hair. She even took time to confer with her big brother during the game.

The photos from the day make it clear the Cambridge family are committed tennis fans. Whether George was serving up a disappointed facepalm or all four of the royals were pulling faces at a particularly exciting play, they were nothing if not animated. None more so than Charlotte, although she appeared to be just as happy petting police dogs prior to the match as she was when she took her place in the stands.

Meanwhile, for Kate, attending Wimbledon isn’t just a chance for family-bonding; it’s also one of the highlights of her summer events calendar. The longtime tennis fan already attended several games this year, and on July 15, she presented women’s singles winner Marketa Vondrousova with the Venus Rosewater Dish. She’s also set to present the men’s singles final winner with the Wimbledon Trophy.
