The future Danish king, 55, was on a private holiday in Spain while Mary was on official business in New York.

He was pictured visiting an art gallery and dining with Casanova, 47, sparking unsubstantiated rumours of a dalliance.

Casanova furiously denied the rumours in a brief statement but went to ground after that.

Now she has reappeared on Instagram to acknowledge the passing of nine years since her former mother-in-law died.

Between 2005 and 2008, Casanova was married to Cayetano Martinez de Irujo, whose mother was the Duchess of Alba, one of Europe’s richest aristocrats.

“I miss you so so much … your affection, your sense of humour, your motherly way of caring and taking care of us, how I wish you never left,” Casanova wrote, sharing a picture of herself with the Duchess.

“Even though sometimes you still sit here next to me. 🙏🏻🖤

“You always loved me almost like another daughter, no matter what. Till the day you left you always held my hand.

“Thank you for your unconditional love. 🙏🏻”

Followers took to the comments section of Casanova’s post to offer support.

“A huge hug,” one person wrote.

“She was unique,” wrote another, referring to the Duchess of Alba.

‘Flatly deny’

After Lecturas published pictures of Prince Frederik with the blonde beauty in Spain, she posted a letter on Instagram indicating potential legal action against the publication.

“I flatly deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederik and me,” she said.

“Any statement of this type is not only completely untrue but also distorts the facts in a malicious manner.

“This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honour, truth and privacy.”

Neither Frederik nor Mary has commented publicly on the rumours.

A spokesperson for the royal family bluntly told Danish magazine B.T that they “do not comment on rumours or insinuations”.

Sources close to Casanova said she and Frederik were simply “old friends” who have “several mutual acquaintances”.

And according to Spanish magazine Hola!, Casanova only joined Frederik when another acquaintance of his pulled out and asked her to go in her place.

On the day that Casanova publicly denied a relationship with Frederik, he and Princess Mary presented a united front as they visited a museum with Queen Margrethe of Denmark and Frederik’s aunt Princess Benedikte.

Australian-born Mary, 51, showed her support with a subtle message, wearing a necklace with her husband’s initial “F”.

The pair celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in May 2023.
