Reason Coldplay chose Perth over Sydney revealed as the band defends its environmental credentials

Coldplay have revealed they chose Perth over Sydney for their Australian shows this weekend to save on fuel and create less pollution.

The band, who are famously eco-conscious, made the revelation after they were criticised in the British press for flying 7000 kilometres to play just two shows at Optus Stadium this weekend.

An article in the UK’s Daily Mail slammed the band’s decision to make a detour during the Asian leg of their tour to play the Perth gigs and questioned their eco credentials.

The band will fly about 3000km from Jakarta to Perth then another 4000km to Kuala Lumpur in time for their gig on November 22.

The special Perth gigs came about following what is believed to be a seven-figure deal with the WA Government.

It is expected the gigs will inject $20 million into the economy and create jobs.

However, the band now reveal the main draw card came down to carbon footprint for their Music of the Spheres world tour.

The band play in Indonesia on Wednesday night and said they wanted to come to Perth as it was a shorter flight from Jakarta.
