Relationships Australia WA launches Stress Less course in Mandurah aimed at helping people manage stress

A Mandurah support service is launching a new program in response to growing concerns about stress and its impact on mental health.

Relationships Australia WA’s Stress Less course comes after a national survey found most of its respondents had experienced stress last year, with one in five revealing their mental health had been extremely impacted by the rising cost of living.

Facilitator and psychologist Tina Gratton, who wrote the course, said it was designed to equip individuals with essential knowledge and practical strategies to manage stress effectively.

“In our modern world, stress has become an increasing factor in our lives,” she said.

“We are all susceptible — stress does not discriminate. We need to empower people to effectively manage their stress and this course gives them the tools to do just that.”

Ms Gratton said Beyond Blue’s recent national survey found 77 per cent of respondents reported experiencing stress in 2023, with a third feeling “quite a bit” or “extremely” stressed.

In the same survey, 83 per cent of respondents cited the rising cost of living as a significant factor negatively impacting their mental health.

It also reported more than 75 per cent of all doctor’s visits were for stress-related ailments and complaints.

“The course teaches its participants to form a comprehensive understanding of what stress is and how it impacts their bodies, health and overall wellbeing, and helps them identify personal stressors and provide practical strategies to manage stress more effectively,” Ms Gratton said.

“Given the substantial impact of stress on both physical and mental health, learning to manage stress is crucial.”

Stress Less will run on September 3 from 6.30pm to 9.30pm and costs $30, with concession fees available.

The organisation runs a range of courses about mental health, parenting and relationships.
