Residents in Yalyallup urged to stay indoors after farm shed fire prompts urgent HAZMAT warning

A shed fire near a regional airport has sparked an urgent HAZMAT warning by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services as residents are urged to stay inside their homes.

People in Yalyallup, in The City of Busselton, are urged to close their doors and windows as smoke from a farm shed fire on Giles Road is blowing potentially dangerous smoke in a northerly direction.

Emergency services issued an alert at 8.25pm stating the smoke was blowing in the direction of Sues Road, consuming a large area including Busselton Margaret River Airport.

Firefighters are currently at the scene trying to contain the fire.

“People should stay away from the area,” an alert said.

“If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel.”

Residents are urged to stay away from the smoke and ensure air conditioners are switched off as it could be dangerous.

Anyone with health concerns is urged to contact their local doctor or Health Direct on 1800 022 222 for advice.

Motorists are urged to reduce their speed if they are forced to travel through the area.
