Guitarist-songwriter-singer Robbie Robertson, who was the frontman for the Band in the 1970s and collaborated extensively with Bob Dylan and Martin Scorsese, has passed away at the age of 80. According to his management, Robertson died on Wednesday in Los Angeles after a long illness. His manager, Jared Levine, announced that Robertson was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. Robertson’s musical career included working on various film projects with Scorsese, with their most recent collaboration being “Killers of the Flower Moon.” In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River. Robertson is best known for his work with the Band, writing classic songs such as “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” He recently gave his final interview, discussing his long-standing collaboration with Scorsese, which will be released in full at a later date. Robertson’s music career began at a young age when he joined a group called the Hawks before eventually forming the Band with Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson. They gained fame with their albums “Music From Big Pink” and “The Band.” The group experienced success in the early ’70s, including touring with Dylan and performing at renowned festivals such as Woodstock. However, due to substance abuse issues among band members, Robertson disbanded the group after their farewell concert, “The Last Waltz,” in 1976. Robertson went on to have a sporadic solo career and worked closely with Scorsese on multiple film projects. He was inducted into the Canadian Juno Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Songwriters.
