Two officers were seen tending to a stricken man as he sat against the school fence in the town’s High Common Road.

The injured man was holding a bandage to the left side of his face as they awaited the arrival of an ambulance crew who arrived moments later at around 1.45pm.

It’s understood pupils were told to stay inside the building as police helped the man and gathered info from locals.

Some kids contacted their parents to tell them about the alarming incident with some worried an attacker may still be at large.

A source said: “The whole school was put on lockdown amid fears a knife man was still out there in the street.

“The kids are obviously anxious and some have been phoning their parents to tell them what’s happening.

“It could be unconnected to the school but at this stage details aren’t clear and it’s obviously very worrying for everyone.”

Further down St Leonards Road officers were seen searching a lay-by and standing close to a bin in the normally quiet residential area.
