Screen Queen reviews: Onefour, the Milli Vanilli doco, the story of The Wiggles and RHOBH

Onefour: Against All Odds

Thursday, streaming on Netflix

I’m getting quite the musical education at the moment. Last week I was deep-diving into the world of reggaeton courtesy of Netflix’s great new series, Neon. This week I’m discovering another intriguing musical genre: Aussie drill.

This is a type of contemporary hip-hop which first originated in Chicago. It’s out there, often associated with gang culture, and has incredibly violent undertones. It made its way to the UK in 2012, and it turns out Australia also has its own drill superstars, a group called Onefour.

These guys had it tough growing up in Sydney’s Mt Druitt, getting mixed up in all sorts of bad stuff. Some of their crew have ended up in jail, and they sing about their beef with the cops and with rival gangs, and let’s just say you won’t be bopping along to their music in the car with Nan and the kids any time soon.

But real talk: they’re actually pretty great.

Unfortunately the police don’t agree, continually shutting down their gigs, worried their music will incite violence, effectively killing the boys’ careers before they’re off the ground.

This doco takes a close look at what this has meant for the group’s members, examines whether those violence claims are true, and looks at the wider implications for music and self-expression as a whole. There are interviews with the band, with cops, and with those who helped them find their voice — it’s all super fascinating.

Sure, I’m a middle-aged suburban mum, but this little NWA-loving 90s teen inhaled this. If you see me rolling through 6162 with their music cranked this summer, don’t be surprised — just please don’t call the cops.

I grew up with pictures of Fab and Rob from Milli Vanilli on my walls, ripped from the pages of my Smash Hits magazine. Can’t say I was too fussed to discover they weren’t the real deal — I just liked looking at their faces and listening to their tinny pop.

Adult me loved this doco, which examines what really happened when two enthusiastic boys from Munich were discovered by a pop svengali and handed fame on a plate.

Justice for Fab and Rob!

If you ever owned a Now That’s What I Call Music cassette, then this one’s for you.

If you’ve read my story on The Wiggles this week, you’ll know my love for the OG kids entertainers runs deep. Adored this look back at their early life and how the band has evolved through the years.
