A man has been killed in the second terrifying shooting to rock Sydney’s southwest over the past 24 hours.
Emergency services were called to Broughton St in Canterbury about 2am after reports of gunshots.
A man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for gunshot wounds.
Tragically, despite the best efforts of paramedics the man died at the scene.
The man is yet to be formally identified, however is believed to be aged in his 20s.
Police said investigations were in their infancy, but they believe the shooting is a targeted attack.
Witnesses told 9News they heard multiple gunshots in the area on Thursday morning.
Police are appealing for anyone who might have been nearby about 2am, or who may have dashcam footage, to contact police or Crimestoppers.
The shooting comes only hours after prominent western Sydney lawyer Mahmoud Abbas was shot in a separate targeted attack.
The 30-year-old was treated by emergency services outside his Greenacre home on Wednesday morning for gunshot wounds.
Police believe Abbas was outside his home when he was approached by an unknown person and shot.
Detective Superintendent Adam Johnson said on Wednesday afternoon that Abbas was being prepared for surgery.
He said it was too early in the investigation to speculate about the possible motive for the attack.
Thursday’s attack is the second shooting in 24 hours and the fifth in just the past week in Sydney’s southwest.
On Sunday, a further three men were shot in an unrelated shooting also in Greenacre.
Police believe a gunman opened fire on Ahmad Al-Azzam as he sat parked in a car on Mayvic St.
The 25-year-old was hit multiple times in the terrifying attack, including in the head.
Parked 50m down the road in another car were Kaashif Richards, 22, and Achiraya Jantharat, 19.
The two bystanders were also tragically caught in the crossfire, with all three men later hospitalised.
The attacks mark a continued escalation in shooting attacks across Sydney’s this year.
Two men were shot in Marrickville on July 7 after a balaclava-clad gunmen opened fire in a barber shop.
In June, gangland figure Alen Moradian was shot and killed in an underground carpark in Bondi.
Just last week, a man was charged with murder following the daylight shooting of a man in southwest Sydney.
Marvin Oraiha, 24, was gunned down in the driveway of his home in Elizabeth Hills in May.
