Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes in Pretoria

A ballistic expert is set to take the stand in the trial of the five men charged with the murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa on Monday, 15 April.

The matter was postponed in March to allow the defence to prepare for the cross-examination of the witnesses.

In the last court appearance, Christopher Matlou, an investigator from the Road Traffic Management Corporation wrapped up his testimony.

Matlou revealed that information from the national administration traffic information system (NaTIS) contradicts the testimony of accused 1 Mzuikawukhulelwa Sibiya who said that he was not residing in Gauteng at the time Meyiwa was killed.

As previously reported, Meyiwa was killed at the home of his then-girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo on 26 October 2014 in Vosloorus.

During his testimony, the investigator testified that a few months before Meyiwa was killed Sibiya made a booking for a learner’s licence in Brakpan, Gauteng. He had registered Sotho Hostel in Vosloorus as his address.

Sibiya failed the initial test in July and registered for another one in September in Boksburg and eventually passed.

In September 2023, Peter Jacobus Smuts from CIT company SBV testified that the gun which allegedly killed Senzo Meyiwa was stolen during a CIT heist in a shopping centre in Rabie Ridge.

Smuts said the firearm was reported stolen immediately after the incident, and a case was registered.

“The firearm is capable of firing other 9mm ammunition. It can fire a Complete or Copper Metal Jacket (CMJ) which is the same size as the Full Metal Jacket (FMJ),” he said at the time.

The gun was found in accused 3 Mthobisi Mncube’s possession when he was arrested in 2015 for the murder of a taxi boss.

FIVE MEN ARE ON TRIAL FOR THE MURDER

Five men are on trial for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa. MuzikawukhulelwaSibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are on trial for the murder of Meyiwa.
