Severe weather warning for Perth Metro & South West, as damaging winds expected to roll through

A severe weather warning is in place for the Perth Metropolitan area and South West from Thursday evening to Friday morning.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued an alert for residents in the Lower West, South West and Perth to prepare their homes for damaging winds to roll through.

Wind gusts of about 90km/h are expected to set in at about 11pm on Thursday and continue through until 9am on Friday.

Locations which may be affected include Gingin, Ellenbrook, Kalamunda, Midland, Harvey, Dwellingup and the Perth hills.

The unusual weather is expected to cause damage to homes and make travel dangerous.

A high-pressure system to the south of the state and a trough deepening along the coast to the north is resulting in a strengthening easterly airstream over parts of southwestern Western Australia.

WHAT TO DO

  • Store or weigh down loose objects around your home like outdoor furniture that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury
  • Ensure your emergency kit is complete including a battery-operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit
  • Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area
  • Move vehicles under cover
  • Campers should find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, stormwater drains and streams

If you are away from home contact family or friends to prepare your property.
