Mohan named mayor
While Sheila Mohan was installed as the next mayor of Cupertino by a unanimous vote of her fellow city councilmembers, the selection of vice mayor for 2024 was more hotly contested. The installation took place Dec. 14 at Cupertino Community Hall.
Mohan, who was elected to the council in 2022, was nominated for mayor by J.R. Fruen, who won his seat in the same election. She in turn nominated Fruen for vice mayor, but that was quickly followed by councilmembers Liang Chao and Kitty Moore each nominating the other for the vice mayor’s chair. Chao is in her second term on the council, and Moore’s first term ends in December 2024.
The nominations were followed by a series of split votes, with Chao and Moore on the losing end of all three and Fruen serving as the swing vote in his successful bid to become vice mayor.
Mohan succeeds Hung Wei as Cupertino’s mayor.
