Shimano Catch of the Week: Churchlands teen Taj Dorrington reels in monster cuttlefish offshore fishing in WA

Churchlands teenager Taj Dorrington wasn’t expecting to find himself facing a monster of the deep while offshore fishing.

The 14-year-old John XXIII student was using a Vexed Bottom Meat while demersal fishing.

Using a PE3 combo, Taj thought he was snagged and opened his bail arm to see if releasing the pressure would allow the hybrid rig to free itself.

When Taj noticed line was still coming off his reel, he flicked the bail arm over and set the hook.

A solid weight came on the end and it started taking some line.

As Taj pulled it up the lack of fight meant it felt like a giant rock and he was even more confused. It duly revealed itself as a huge cuttlefish, which was only just hooked by the skin.

They grabbed the landing net and scooped it up, with the cuttlefish squirting ink on Taj’s face as payback.

That is one thumper of a cuttlefish and Taj has also won a Shimano lure wrap tackle box, which he can pick up from any of WA’s three Compleat Angler and Camping World stores, and is in the running to win the monthly prize of a Shimano combo.
