SIOUX FALLS — The story of a woman’s journey from South Sudan to Sioux Falls is this year’s selection for One Book Siouxland.
Siouxland Libraries announced Wednesday, Jan. 3, that “Don’t Look Back” by Achut Deng and Keely Hutton as the book selected as a focal point for discussion, events, and activities.
The book recounts Deng’s story of escaping civil war in South Sudan, living in a Kenyan refugee camp, and coming to America. The story highlights loss and survival as Deng details her refugee experience and tells a powerful story of hope, strength, and faith in the future. Deng is now an American citizen and works in Sioux Falls. She is the mother of three sons.
“It’s an honor to have Achut as our featured author for the seventh annual One Book Siouxland,” said Jodi Fick, Siouxland Libraries Director. “Achut’s journey is a courageous and inspiring story that sparks conversations about culture, identity, and challenges refugees face coming to America.”
“Don’t Look Back” is available at all 13 Siouxland Libraries locations or can be checked out as an eBook or audiobook so you can read the book before April. The community can look forward to thoughtful conversations during activities and weekly events at library branches.
“This year, we’re passing the mic to community members to share their experiences coming to Sioux Falls,” Fick said. “Events will feature the cultures, challenges, and stories of refugees, New Americans, and service providers in the community. Activities like the teen art contest, Sioux Falls refugee experience display, and book discussion kits are ways to engage in the book’s themes, too.”
To check out the book or see the schedule of events and activities in April, go to siouxlandlib.org/one-book or visit a branch location.
