Spring’s colors burst onto scene at South Coast Botanic Garden – Daily News

Spring was bustin’ out all over on Monday, April 1, at the South Coast Botanic Garden.

More than 21,000 bulbs were planted for the new exhibit “Bloom!” that launched on Monday. Five floral displays are part of the event expected to bloom through June.

One of the displays, at the Dorothy and John Bohannon Rose Garden, is expected to peak in May, according to a press release, which is in time for the fourth annual “Soar,” a tropical butterfly exhibit, which opens on May 1.

“We took our courtyard, which can be a tricky place for some plants to thrive, and transformed it from top to bottom to ensure guests’ senses are immediately awakened,” said Chief Operating Officer MaryLynn Mack, in a press release, about “Bloom!.” “From there, they will ultimately be led to our Amphitheater Lawn where the exhibit culminates with more than 21,000 bulbs of climate-adapted species so that they will return year after year.”

Terry Huang, the Garden’s director of Living Collections, in an email, said plants have been planted that are native or climate-adapted so they return year after year with little fuss.

Bulbs planted, according to Huang, include:

–Tazetta-type daffodils;

–Cluster-lilies;

–California poppies;

–Baby blue eyes wildflowers; and

–Elegant clarkia plants.

“Bloom!” is included in the general admission at South Coast Botanic Garden, which is free for members and up to $15 for non-members.

The garden  is located at 26300 Crenshaw Blvd. on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
