Summer 2024 fun in Hong Kong – 6 events, from an anime convention to a pop-up water park

Summer is in full swing, so turn up the heat – and fun – by joining one of these events happening in Hong Kong.

Whether it is making a splash at a water park in Discovery Bay or getting your ABBA on at the musical Mamma Mia! Hong Kong has your summer vibes sorted.

1. 100% Doraemon and Friends

Step into the whimsical world of the beloved robot cat in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

A Doraemon sculpture 12 metres (39ft) tall stands among several smaller life-size models in a free-entry outdoor area, making it a great photo spot. The ticketed exhibitions feature an exclusive screening of an animated short film by the team behind Doraemon, interactive themed rooms and replicas of the creator’s other original works.

Hong Kong is the first stop on the exhibition’s international tour, so fans in the city get first dibs on limited-edition merch.

Tickets for the exhibitions are already sold out, so make sure you act fast to snag your free entry to the outdoor area. Reservations open on Klook every Tuesday at noon.

2. Hong Kong Book Fair

Pick out your next read at one of the city’s biggest literary events, which returns for a week starting from July 17 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Besides a diverse mix of books for sale, this year’s film- and TV-themed event features works by Hong Kong directors Wong Kar-wai and Ann Hui, as well as screen adaptations of popular novels.

Writers from around the world, including award-winning Blossoms author Jin Yucheng, and scriptwriter and novelist Kim Ho-yeon, will conduct seminars to share more about their craft.

Tickets to the book fair also cover neighbouring exhibitions Sports and Leisure Expo and World of Snacks, so you can grab a treat to go along with your new book on your way out.

3. Discovery Bay Summer Splashtopia

Dive into fun with Spashtopia at Discovery Bay until September 1 – Tai Pek Beach has been transformed into a 48,000 sq ft (4,460 square-metre) water adventure park.

Plunge down a 10-metre water slide and take on an inflatable obstacle course, or relax in a float. Either way, Splashtopia promises to be a splashing good time.

Adults with children enjoy discounts with the family bundle.

4. Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong

Anime, manga and gaming fans are in for a treat with the Ani-com and Games 2024 taking place from July 26 to 30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Now in its 25th year, the fair features demonstrations and workshops hosted by comic writers and artists from Europe and China. Well-known cosplayers from around the world, including Japan’s Saki Miyamoto and Thailand’s Thames, will also make appearances.

Unlike previous years, tickets will not be sold at the venue. Be sure to get them early at designated convenience stores or on the Ani-com website.

5. Unheard Sound and Music Festival

While there will not be another major music festival in Hong Kong for a few months, there’s no shortage of action in the underground music scene. From July 18 to 28, Eaton HK’s Unheard Festival dives into the essence of music and our perception of sound through live performances, workshops, and screenings.

Highlights include a documentary on female pioneers of electronic music, a storytelling session by the deaf community, and a production workshop on creating a mash-up of a Cantopop track.

Set on a Greek island, Mamma Mia! follows a young bride-to-be in her quest to uncover her father’s identity, bringing together three men from her mother’s past. Featuring timeless ABBA hits such as “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me” and “Mamma Mia”, this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship will have you dancing in your seat.
