Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac divides followers with controversial opinion

Sam Mac has divided his Instagram followers with his opinion on a growing trend — huge water bottles.

Upon returning home to his pregnant fiancée Rebecca “Bec” James, Sam spied her new four-litre water bottle, wrapped in plastic on the kitchen bench.

Social and fashion trends online have sparked a demand for extremely large water bottles, ranging from one to even five litres.

“Bec filmed me because she knew I wouldn’t cope well with this,” Mac said in a caption.

“Am I insane or are the sizes of drink bottles becoming absurd?”

As he walked in, the Sunrise weather presenter put his face in his hands, repeatedly saying “No!” under his breath.

“This is absolutely pushing it right — I’m going to be honest with you, it’s ridiculous,” he lovingly told Bec, picking up her other two-litre water bottle.

“But this…” he added, reaching for the brand new four-litre bottle.

“If you walk around with this, and pass it off as a drink bottle… nup. We’re done. Four litres!

“Where are you doing your workout, which desert?”

Bec laughed: “You don’t want to borrow my drink bottle?”

Sam joked: “I don’t have any treks organised through the Andes this week.”

To prove his point, he grabbed his 600mL water bottle from the cupboard, calling it “normal”.

Known to see the humour in things, he then decided to make an even larger ‘bottle’ for his fiancée, cleaning out one of their garbage bins.

On the side of the green bin, he added a ‘label’ for a new water bottle brand.

“Got you a present,” he said as Bec walked out.

“It takes two people to move but that’s ok, as long as you’re hydrated.”

He then passed her the accompanying “straw,” a jumbo cardboard cylinder.

“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” he joked.

Sam captioned the video: “Yes or No to a 4 Litre Drink Bottle? 💦

“If you know someone using an offensively large Drink Bottle, tag them below to commence the intervention 🙅‍♂️ #H2No.”

“Agreed Sammy. Enough is enough. We gotta put a stop to it,” fitness trainer and former TV star Sam Wood said.

“I’m with you, it’s getting out of hand 😳,” a second said.

7NEWS Melbourne presenter Rebecca Maddern responded: “I just like a glass. Call me old fashioned.”

“Insane. I thought my 2L was bad. I only got it because I’m lazy and don’t refill my 1L one,” a commenter said.

Others disagreed, with one writing, “Noooo, large water bottles for the win!”

“I have stupidly large bottle because I’m on a fluid restriction and it’s the only way I can stay accountable,” another said.

“She’s drinking for two?” added a user.
