Tamil Nadu schools and colleges closed as cyclone Michaung approaches

Schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu have been closed today, December 4, 2023, as a precautionary measure in light of the approaching cyclone Michaung.
Schools and colleges in the regions Puducherry, Kalaiselvi, Chennai, Chengalpet and Thiruvallore have been shut.
Schools in Puducherry and Karaikal were closed on December 1 as a preventative measure by the government.A 50-member NDRF team from Bengaluru is on standby in Kanchipuram district, according to reports.
News agency ANI on December 2, announced on X, that the district collector has announced holiday for schools and colleges on December 4, 2023. The tweet reads, ‘Kanchipuram, Chennai, Chengalpet and Thiruvallore districts collector announces holiday for schools and colleges on 4th December due to heavy rain forecast by IMD.’
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts for both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The depression over the Bay of Bengal has deepened and is expected to transform into a cyclone before making landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Monday, December 4, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and neighboring regions today and on Tuesday due to the influence of this cyclonic system.
It was earlier reported that the depression is moving west-northwestwards at 18 kmph, intensified into a deep depression, currently centered approximately 500 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 510 km east-southeast of Chennai, 630 km southeast of Nellore, and 710 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam as of 5:30 AM, according to a bulletin from IMD.
The system is projected to continue its west-northwest movement, gaining strength to evolve into a cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. Subsequently, it is expected to progress northwestwards, reaching the west-central Bay of Bengal off the south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by today evening, i.e December 4.
Cyclone Michaung is forming over the Bay of Bengal. Waterlogging affects some areas, causing traffic congestion and other issues. In addition, IMD has issued an ‘Orange’ alert for moderate to heavy rainfall for parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
