With the democratisation of AI tools, it can become an element of crime in the future, as scammers use the dark art of deepfakes to defraud people.
On the morning of July 9, Radhakrishnan P S, a 72-year-old retiree from Coal India, was enjoying a relaxed morning at his home in Kozhikode. Piercing the silence, the phone started ringing. The voice at the other end? An ‘old colleague’ in dire need of hospital funds. Radhakrishnan’s heart melted, but he said he wanted to be convinced that it was not a hoax call. The colleague — or so he thought — came on video and had a chat with him.
