Three things to know about the NEW ESKOM CEO

On Friday Public Enterprise Minister Pravin Gordhan announced Dan Marokane as the new CEO of embattled state power utility Eskom, nearly a year after Andre de Ruyter vacated the position.

Marokane is no stranger to Eskom having left the offices at Megawatt Park eight years ago. Here are a few things to know about the new Chief Executive Officer.

MAROKANE’S QUALIFICATIONS

Marokane is a qualified chemical engineer. According to LinkedIn, he graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He then obtained a Masters in Petroleum Engineering from the University of London.

Marokane also holds an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) from UCT.

PREVIOUS STINT AT ESKOM

The 52-year-old has held various positions at Eskom in his five and a half years at the power utility before leaving in 2015 for ethical reasons.

According to TimesLive, Marokane has been appointed as a Divisional Executive (Primary Energy), Chief Commercial Officer, Group executive (Technology and Commercial), Acting Group Executive (Group Capital) and Group Executive (Group Capital) at Eskom.

Marokane left the power utility after being abruptly suspended.

Judge Raymond Zondo in his State Capture report, described Marokane suspension as a ploy to pave the way to state capture by the Gupta brothers and former President Jacob Zuma, by removing key individuals occupying key positions at Eskom.

CURRENT WORK

Marokane is only expected to occupy Eskom’s hot seat in March 2024, meanwhile, he continued his duties as CEO of cash strapped cane sugar refining company Tongaat-Hulett.

He was appointed in an acting position earlier this year. Marokane has been working on turning around the company since his appointment as executive director since 2019.
