NEW DELHI: The Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE) at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) on Thursday released a report titled “Right Teacher for Every Child: State of Teachers, Teaching, and Teacher Education Report 2023” emphasising the availability and deployment of teachers, the research conducted in eight states across India reveals that 35 to 41 percent of mathematics teachers in both government and private schools lacked mathematics as a subject at the undergraduate level and were involved with teaching the subject.
More than half the teachers in primary classes (Class 1-5) in schools across the country don’t have the necessary professional qualifications and around 30% teachers are teaching subjects in which they do not have the expertise.
The report examines various aspects of school education, including the social and gender profiles, qualifications, and wages of teachers. The study based on existing available data and survey findings from Maharashtra, Bihar, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Punjab, Mizoram and Telangana; encompassing 422 schools, 3615 teachers, and 422 head teachers. This marks the second edition of the biennial report, initially published by TISS’ Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CTET) in 2022.
