Travis Kelce gave his “New Heights” listeners the inside scoop on his ankle injury following a scare in the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over the Vikings on Sunday.
Cameras caught the tight end slamming his helmet to the ground after injuring his ankle after making a catch at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota.
“I rolled my ankle,” Kelce said. “It was unfortunate. If you watch it in slow motion, my ankle kind of slips.”
The 34-year-old said the only person to blame for his injuries is himself, titling himself an injury-prone “grandpa.”
“I’m just out here being old as f–k and just offing myself,” Kelce said. “Because I’m not getting tackled and getting injured. Nobody is doing this to me but me.”
The two-time Super Bowl champ initially feared the injury could be severe — perhaps even a break.
“Initially felt a few things going on in my ankle, didn’t feel great,” Kelce said. “That’s why when I first rolled it I got right off the field, I really couldn’t put much weight on it.”
Kelce ultimately returned to the game following X-rays, however his status for Thursday night’s game against the Broncos remains unclear.
Kelce has been limited in practices, and ESPN.com reported Kelce has been aggressive in trying to get ready because “he hates missing games.”
The injury has sparked a larger conversation about the safety of turf versus grass fields.
“The more unstable it is and the more you throw your feet in the ground, that’s not a good equation,” Kelce said.
Kelce’s injury comes as he is more in the national eye than ever thanks to his relationship with Taylor Swift.
Swift attended games against the Bears and Jets, but did not make the trip to Minnesota.
The newfound relationship dominated the news cycle after the two were linked last month.
And although she was not at the game, Swift and Kelce did hang out on Friday with a “chill night” to celebrate Kelce turning the 34 on Oct. 5.
The pop superstar was first spotted cheering for the Chiefs with Kelce’s mom, Donna in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in Week 3.
The following week, she was joined by fellow A-list friends in a box suite at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for the Chiefs-Jets game that drew 26.7 million viewers.
Although Swift was nowhere to be found at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Chiefs still managed to secure their fourth win of the season with Kelce tallying 10 catches for 67 yards and one touchdown.
The world now waits to see whether or not Kelce plays Thursday night and whether or not Swift be there to cheer him on.
