Tributes flow after Matt Borromei killed in scooter crash in Italy

A young Australian man has tragically died in a scooter accident while on holiday in an idyllic Italian town.

Matthew Borromei, from Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, was riding a scooter in the Sicilian town of Taormina when he lost control and crashed into a cement pillar.

Local media reported the crash occurred shortly after 9pm local time on Wednesday.

Emergency services rushed to help the 25-year-old but he died at the scene.

Mr Borromei’s family confirmed the death in a heartbreaking post to social media.

The post said the young Aussie died in one of his “favourite places he discovered on his European travels”.

“Miss you. Forever in our hearts and thoughts,” his father Rino Borromei posted.

Tributes are flowing for Mr Borromei, with the Kalgoorlie Railways Football Club saying “all words genuinely fail at this moment.”

“He will be greatly missed by many for his energy, smile and zest of life,” the club said.

“We love you mate.”

Mr Borromei had gushed about his travels online, taking to Instagram to share his experience in the “gorgeous town” of Molise.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment.
