Emergency crews rushed to Baberton Mains Avenue after the alarm was raised around 10.25pm.

Tonight cops formally named Mr Smith – known locally as Jimmy – as the person who died.

A man and woman were rushed to hospital after the fatal explosion which levelled a house to the ground.

One hero dad and another local selflessly raced to rescue a third person from the remains of the home as neighbouring residents were evacuated.

Earlier today the Health and Safety Executive confirmed that the eruption was caused by by “internal gas installation” at the property.

There are understood to be no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Smith’s heartbroken family has paid tribute to him.

In a statement released through the police, they said: “It is with deep regret that our Father/ Papa/ Father in Law, James Findlay Smith, sadly lost his life in the tragic events at Baberton Mains Avenue on 1st December 2023.

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved and our well wishes go to the impacted families.

“We would like to thank the emergency services and the neighbours who went above and beyond for their support and help on the evening and following days.”

Pieces of the building were blown over the street after the deadly blast.

Nearby cars and houses had their windows smashed by flying debris and residents said their houses shook.

Hours after the explosion a fundraiser was set up to help a family who have lost their home, just weeks before Christmas.

A GoFundMe page has raised more than £25,000 from over a thousand kindhearted donors.
