TV Reviews: Hard Quiz Kids, Fallen Idols, Spicks And Specks and Bridgerton

Hard Quiz Kids

Saturday, 7.30pm, ABC Family

Finding something to sit down and watch at a family-friendly hour can be a challenge. There’s either the news (nope), reality juggernauts like MAFS (um, no thank you) or your requisite renovation show — there’s only so many times you can force your child to sit down and watch someone caulk a bathroom (I say this from experience).

Enter Hard Quiz Kids! This show, a family-friendly version of the ABC favourite hosted by Tom Gleeson, is custom-made for smaller people, and it’s genuinely entertaining to watch regardless of your age.

The creators have kept everything viewers love about the original, including Gleeson’s trademark grumpiness, the only difference being that the contestants are aged between 10 and 13.

Subjects are just as varied and are picked by the kids themselves. In the two episodes we sighted, they were weighing in on everything from the Leadbeater possum to the musical Hamilton, Minecraft and Caterpillar earthmovers.

As it says in an official release, “this is a show with heart, where cleverness and eccentricity are celebrated” — and it’s an absolute delight.

Yes, all the kids are subjected to Gleeson’s lighthearted ribbing, but they give as good as they get.

Having watched this with my own 10-year-old, I can attest: this is by far the best family-friendly entertainment show on Aussie TV right now.

Do not miss it.

This four-part doco, which delves into the lives of Nineties pop darlings Nick and Aaron Carter, has caused major ripples since launching in the US — and it’s not hard to see why. Some of the stories unearthed in this are genuinely distressing, especially in light of allegations currently circling about other Nineties musical stars. Deeply disturbing and dark — proceed with caution.

Spicks And Specks

Myf, Alan and Adam are back. Which sounds strange to say, as constant re-runs mean it feels as though the hosts of this long-running music trivia series never actually left. Almost 20 years on from when it first aired, this perennial favourite still feels genuinely fresh and new, thanks in part to the new generation of guest panellists joining the Team Captains, including Abbie Chatfield, Steph Tisdell, Jenny Tian and Elly-May Barnes. This never gets old.

This one’s for all the lycra warriors who embraced the first series of this fascinating doco, which takes a peek at the stories behind France’s famed cycling race. Season two continues to go deep, delving behind the scenes of the 21 stages of last year’s contest, looking into “the scandals, low blows and thirst for glory”. If you’re a cycling enthusiast, you won’t want to miss this one.

Bridgerton S3 Part 2

Thursday, streaming on Netflix

We’ve only just finished fanning ourselves coquettishly over that carriage scene. And now the second part is hitting screens. But if you think it’s going to be more consequence-free rumpy-pumpy in the stage coach, think again. Yes, things are about to get rocky for Pen and Colin as the repercussions of her secret double life come back to bite. Still on the fence about this season, but it is undeniably watchable — you be the judge.
